US West Inc’s cable TV and wireless division MediaOne Group Inc has launched MediaOne Connect, a Hollywood equivalent to Cable & Wireless Communications Plc’s London 155 Mbps ATM network Sohonet. The network is built on a $250m 10Gbps fiber network, and MediaOne will be selling LAN interconnection, native Internet Protocol and ATM services, and the network will interconnect directly with London’s Sohonet network, which serves UK film post production companies. The network is aimed mainly at the Hollywood studios that have huge bandwidth needs for transferring digital video, but will also serve companies in the Los Angeles basin. The costs of access will range from between $1,200 to $100,000 per month depending on bandwidth.
