Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati (WSGR), the US technology law firm known for its behind-the-scenes involvement in the Microsoft trial, is opening a European office in Cambridge, the UK’s center for IT high-tech, according to industry sources.

Chris Smart, managing director of Cambridge Research & Innovation Ltd, a venture capital firm specializing in technology protected by IP rights, says the move would further underline the area’s reputation. The Cambridge tag is much more generic that just a locale, he says, it’s a metaphor for the technology business.

Harvey Schloss, WSGR’s chief financial officer, tried to scotch the rumors, saying that there hasn’t been a decision made on the UK move. The law firm, he says, will be concentrating on its new branch office in San Francisco which will be the center of its mergers and acquisitions department.
