Blue Bell, Pennsylvania-based Unisys has become one of the more proactive supporters of open source from a services and systems integration approach over the past 12 months and launched its Open and Secure Integrated Solutions, Oasis, services in June.

Earlier this month the company added open source enterprise content management firm Alfresco Software Inc to its list of open source partners, joining MySQL AB and Red Hat Inc’s JBoss open source middleware subsidiary. It has now agreed an OEM agreement with GroundWork to include its Monitor Professional network and systems monitoring software within the Oasis framework.

San Francisco, California-based GroundWork’s Monitor offers availability monitoring of servers, devices and applications, as well as web-based configuration, alarms, and documentation, as well as role-based dashboards and service-level agreement reports.

Meanwhile, Unisys has also predicted that business will begin to take a more architectural approach to open source software deployment in 2007. The company believes that the piecemeal approach to open source adoption makes it unsuitable for mission-critical applications, but that customers will begin to take a wider view of open source deployment.

The services company is also predicting the rise of specialized open source stacks, for business intelligence, content management and output management, for example, as well as an expansion of systems integration and channel distribution capabilities from open source vendors.

Finally Unisys is also predicting that the adoption of service oriented architecture approaches will narrow the gap between legacy and open source environments, ensuring that the two co-exist, while open source software will be deployed alongside SOA strategies with a business on business growth and innovation.
