Sun Microsystems Inc has launched a new release of its Solaris operating system optimized for internet service providers. Solaris ISP Server 2.0, which runs on Sun Sparc and Intel-based hardware, is aimed at medium to large internet, telco and cable service providers, and integrates services such as Sun Internet FTP Server for fast file transfers, Sun Internet News Server for Usenet newsgroups and the Sun WebServer for accessing server-side Java applications. Sun also includes Bandwidth Manager 1.5 for ISPs who want to offer bandwidth service level agreements.

Figures from Siemens AG, which tested the software on a four processor Primergy Intel-based server produced SpecWeb results of 10,212 operations per second, the fastest ever for a 4-way system, claims Sun. It’s possible to host up to 10,000 virtual web sites, 5,000 concurrent FTP connections and over 2,000 concurrent news connection on one server, the company said.

Solaris ISP Server 2.0 is available immediately electronically, or by April 5th on CD-ROM, and costs just under $6,000.
