Sony, reportedly has killed off its flagship series Xperia Z smartphones which was launched in early 2013.

Many of Sony’s fans were eagerly waiting for Sony to unveil Xperia Z6 at Mobile World Congress.

Sony Mobile has confirmed the speculation about the killing the Xperia Z range of top-end smartphones in a blog post.

Sony said: "The Xperia Z line has reached its culmination – Xperia X series represents a new chapter and evolution of our product strategy.

"Whilst the Xperia Z series was all about bringing the best of Sony’s advanced technologies to smartphones, Xperia X series is based on bringing smart, adaptive Sony user experiences across camera, battery performance and hardware / software design."

Sony Mobile, senior product marketing manager, Jun Makino said: "I can’t comment on the future, but we will not be releasing a Z6."

"There will not be a Z6" and that instead the company is "turning to the next stage, with the Xperia X series."

According to Makino the company’s focus now is on, "bringing the next generation of Xperia Series of intelligent smartphones.

The first Xperia X series smartphone range will include Xperia X, Xperia X Performance and Xperia XA.

According to the company, this new series features next-generation technologies in camera, battery and design.

The flagship series was first launched in 2013 with Xperia Z1. Right now, the phones available in the Z series include Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium.

Though, being the flagship series from Sony, Xperia Z had had its share of issues.

Overheating, poor battery life, issues with microSD card, etc were some of the issues.

Xperia Z series sales have significantly dropped and this could be one of the reasons for Sony tried to discontinue Xperia Z series.
