Silicon Graphics Inc is expected to reveal its first MIPS Computer Systems Inc R4000 RISC-based workstations this week. Compaq Computer Corp denies that the Silicon Graphics machines (thought to be mid-range imaging boxes called Crimson) are the results of their joint Advanced Computing Environment design. Compaq said the boxes are too high-end for that, but it’s suggested that a lower-end little brother for them is also in design. Compaq expects to use Silicon Graphics technology, which doesn’t fit its product requirements yet, a few years from now, when prices have fallen to the point where it can be sold to the mass market. Meanwhile Digital Equipment Corp and Compaq also denied UniForum talk that DEC was ready to make the move that was forecast by some, and buy Compaq.
