Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG remains committed to the MIPS Computer Systems Inc R-series RISC and does not want to switch to a part controlled by a major competitor such as IBM Corp, Digital Equipment Corp or Hewlett-Packard Co, chief executive Hans-Dieter Wiedig told the Wall Street Journal, adding that if MIPS were to be taken over by a company such as NEC Corp or DEC, it would have to reconsider its position; Siemens fabricates versions of the MIPS chip, so has more tied up in it than most; that is unlikely to arise now, given that MIPS is on its way to Silicon Graphics Inc (see front) – which should not worry Siemens.
