Sharp Corp is to shift the production of its thin film transistor liquid crystal displays to overseas plants, Sharp president Katsuhiki Machida announced in Tokyo last week. The displays, used in notebooks, are seeing declining market prices as the technology matures. Production is likely to be moved to Asian countries such as Singapore, Taiwan or Korea, Mikkei Microdevices reported. Sharp denied rumors that it would pull out of LCD production, and said it had a number of high-end projects under development, such as TFT-LCD monitors, large-screen continuous grain silicon displays for projection systems, and reflective color displays that don’t require backlighting and use less battery power.
