The World Administrative Radio Conference has completed week two of its discussions on the global allocation of radio frequencies. Although many subjects have been discussed, few conference’s decisions are public knowledge. It has, however, decided that its planned extension to the HF radio broadcasting frequency band should be reserved for Single SideBand technique services to encourage the technology’s take-up, although it has yet to decide which frequencies will be used. An approach for the discussions of future public land mobile telecommunication systems has also been announced. As well as formally agreeing the principles of global spectrum allocation for these services, it has been decided that up to 60MHz should be allocated for personal communication systems, such as Personal Communications Network-type services, and around 170MHz for conventional mobile communications including cellular telephony. The working group for this area is to examine whether these frequencies should be in one or several blocks, and will work out a time-frame and strategy for implementation.
