A consortium headed by UK-based Racal Electronics Plc has won a contract worth over 100m pounds over the next ten years to provide voice and messaging communications links between British diplomatic missions throughout the world. Under a flexible package agreed between the company and the Foreign Office, additional services such as mobile telephony and video conferencing could be included in the deal. The consotium includes SITA, the supplier of telecommunications services to the air transport industry and Hewlett-Packard Co, which will provide the hardware platform based on dual HP9000 Enterprise Servers at separate UK sites to ensure continuity. HP will also provide on-site equipment and round-the-clock support services using its existing relationship with Cisco.
