Oxford-based Research Machines Plc has launched a new range of desktops and workstations based on the 80486 processor, and supporting Intel Corp’s overrated processor upgrade socket: the E-Series machines, including 33MHz and 50MHz desktop machines with cache memory, bundled with MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.0, are the first to incorporate Research’s Advanced Memory Architecture, providing a 128-bit wide path between processor and RAM, supporting up to 256Mb memory; the floor-standing SystemBase servers, again come in 30MHz and 50MHz configurations, with cache memory and disk options ranging from 85Mb to 1.3Gb; also new is the firm’s own version of Microsoft Corp’s LAN Manager, supporting 13,000 users on a Windows-centred network; the new products are aimed at all Research Machines’ educational and design market sectors, and the new hardware costs from UKP2,660 to UKP13,505.
