Intel Corp is not the only company interested in muscling in on the networking of our home (CI No 3,355): Microsoft Corp is currently testing a range of technologies from which to develop ‘standards’ for connecting multiple PCs, internet devices and Windows CE to the internet, according to published reports. Microsoft is working on versions of Windows CE and Windows 5.0 that can forge gateways between home networks and the internet and can probably expect support from Intel and Compaq. Like Intel, Microsoft is testing technologies that let a number of terminals within the home connect to the internet via telephone lines, power lines, coaxial cables and wireless networks. But whereas Intel said last week that it is developing a hub for use in the home, Microsoft is looking for a simpler solution to enable a number of PCs to share a single high-speed internet connection, which would demand little in terms of configuration, the article said.
