Maxtor Corp has regained leadership in the 5.25 OEM disk market – Imprimis Technology has a 1.5Gb 5.25 Winchester and Micropolis Inc is sampling a 1.3Gb drive – but Maxtor moves ahead with its new Panther 2 family, which tops out at 1.67Gb and offers a 10.5mS seek time and also includes 780Mb and 1.22Mb models. Evaluation units are set for March at $3,650 with an SCS interface, and IPI-2 and SMD-E models will follow in the third quarter. Data transfer rates range from 24.3Mbps to 40Mbps. A new Panther 1 family offers 1.35Gb, 1.22Gb and 800Mb capacities, has a 13mS average seek time and 24.3Mbps transfer rates. Evaluation quantities with all three interfaces are out now, for $3,300.
