Intel has released a new cache acceleration software (CAS) for Linux, which is aimed at prioritising application performance and offering solid-state drive (SSD) levels of speed with no migration costs. It will come with built-in data integrity for the chipmaker’s SSD data centre product line-up.

Intel Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group product line manager, Chuck Brown, said that the new CAS complements the company’s SSD data centre lineup by providing a total caching solution that delivers even more value and capability.

"Intel CAS delivers a multi-level cache across the SSD and DRAM for optimal performance," Brown said.

"Compared to short-stroked hard-drive technology, we’ve seen up to 50 times the improvement in I/O performance throughput for read intensive workloads by adding Intel CAS with the Intel SSD 910 series1."

Additionally, the new application provides enhanced performance for I/O-intensive applications running on dedicated servers or virtual machines (VMs), while it can also target performance on precise applications, files, VM or individual database tables.

The new software also offers firms lower TCO with an optimised, integrated offering by balancing CPU and I/O performance.

Intel Attached Platform Storage Software General Manager, Steve Dalto,n said that attempts to solve I/O performance issues at the SAN tier have resulted in wasted spend, productivity, and frustration to both users and IT administrators.

"Intel® CAS allows administrators to target storage performance to those applications that need it the most, offloading IOPS from primary storage to the servers themselves, providing a win-win with previous storage spend," Dalton said.
