IBM Corp and computer retailer CompUSA Inc have joined together in a marketing initiative to provide small and mid-sized business with comprehensive computer systems in a one-stop shopping format. The arrangement will allow CompUSA customers to choose from a range of IBM hardware, software and services and create a custom system to suit their needs. The two are trying to tap a market which is expected to grow 32% in 1998, according to Dataquest, and is approaching $18bn in factory revenue for PC unit shipments alone. And IBM’s choice to partner with a major retailer could give it an advantage over other major vendors also looking to court this market segment. The first offerings will include the Small Business Internet Solution, which includes an IBM PC with monitor and modem, IBM Internet Connection Services, IBM’s Startup for e-business and Home Page Creator software applications. It’s designed to allow small businesses to connect to the internet, email customers, post information on the web and accept orders and payments electronically. Another of the initial offerings will be the Client/Server Network Solution, which is designed to provide a turn-key networking system for growing businesses and includes an IBM Netfinity server and as many IBM PCs or ThinkPads as needed. The package also includes the Lotus Domino Intranet Starter Pack software and all the necessary IBM network interface cards, hubs, tape backup drives, modems for each customer’s specific business needs. The new packages will be available nationwide at the 45 CompUSA Business Centers, which function as a store within a store aimed at the small business user. Hardware, software and in-store consulting services are offered at the Business Center locations.
