In addition to some new object-based middleware management offerings that IBM Corp is set to unveil next week, it’s also going to drag the much-maligned OS/2 Warp operating system into the world of network computers. A new OS/2 Warp offering codenamed Bluebird will be offered specifically for managing distributed networks of PC desktops, network computers (including IBM’s NetStations) other thin clients and remote devices such as laptops and notebooks. The notion is to deliver on some of the promises of reduced cost of ownership made by proponents of network computers and distributed networking computing made by companies such as IBM and Sun Micrystems Inc. Bluebird will offer a browser-based interface but won’t replace the basic OS/2 Warp offering.
