The service provides storage of digital medical images for hospitals and radiology practices, on a storage grid hosted at multiple IBM data centers, and built with IBM hardware and a combination of IBM software and i3Archive’s middleware.
Until now i3Archive’s business has mostly involved the storage of breast-scanning images, via partnerships with GE Medical Systems and Siemens.
At the end of last year it says it became the first supplier to offering both primary and disaster-recovery or secondary backup PACS – Picture Archive and Communications Systems.
Together we are providing small and medium hospitals, clinics and others disaster recovery tools once only available to the larger institutions, said IBM’s vice president for information-based medicine Mike Svinte.
The grid is powered by Intel-based IBM servers and IBM disk arrays, running DB2 and Globus software and i3 middleware. Currently it has a total capacity of 1.2PB – spread over data centers in three locations – but i3Archives said it is planning for 10PB capacity by year-end.
