Hewlett-Packard Co believes it has strengthened its position supplying systems to the US Government with the news that its HP- UX operating system now conforms to standards relating to the Defense Information Systems Agency’s Common Operating Environment. The standardization means Hewlett-Packard is the first vendor to offer Year 2000 tools and systems under the Defense Information Infrastructure COE initiative, a standard that will eventually apply to all Federal systems. Version 10.20 of HP-UX has been configured to support the DISA kernel, which sits on top of the operating system and interacts with application software. The DII COE standard enforces compatibility between different software and hardware. This means in practice that an officer in the field, for example, would be able to monitor all necessary activity on one screen, rather than having to view several workstations.
