Enlighten Systems Solutions Inc, San Mateo, California, has refashioned itself as a seller of open systems management products, after a non-eventful, but relatively lucrative life as a provider of proprietary management tools for Tandem Computers Inc. Its new cause is the Unix, NT and Internet-intranet marketplace, and the firm has just started to ship Enlighten for Windows NT. Its Unix version, Enlighten Unix/Distributed Systems Manager, was introduced last year. Specific NT-oriented features in Enlighten for Windows NT include: NT Registry inspection for hardware and software inventory; device management, which enables alterations to be made to local printers; modifications to Microsoft Exchange Server to provide changes in user information such as add/remove and mail alias; and NT SNMP simple network management protocol support for new event types. Meanwhile, hot on the heels of the rest of industry, Enlighten is planning a major push into Web technology and is expected to announce its Internet management product next month. At the same time, the company has said that it will also sign a deal with IBM Corp’s Tivoli Systems Inc management framework subsidiary to help Tivoli to shore up its lack of management tools.
