Dr William Busby, described as an acknowledged supercomputer expert and currently director for scientific computing at the National Center for Atmospheric Research reckons that the comfortable assumption that the US supercomputer champion, Cray Research Inc maintains substantial performance leadership is no longer true: he says in an interview with the Sam Trade newsletter on US trade with Japan that NEC Corp’s SXX will perform comparably with Cray’s Y-MP; suggesting that the supercomputer agreement with the US will prove of little value because Japanese colleges and government departments will be able to say that the home-grown machine is as powerful as any US machine.
