Corel Computer Corp, the hardware arm of the Canadian software company has announced the availability of its NetWinder WS turnkey web server running the free Apache 1.2.6 web server and a version of Linux from Red hat Software Inc. The company says it has tweaked both the operating system and Apache to run better on its hardware platform, which is based around the 275MHz Intel Corp StrongARM SA110 processor. Ron McNab, general manager of Corel Computer says the server can support 150 concurrent users. In 45 days Corel will ship software enhancements to the WS that will provide email and chat, making it a more general-purpose internet server. The company claims that they are up to 40% faster than any other thin web server on the market, but we haven’t seen any benchmarks as yet, although it promises there are some. The boxes are made under contact by UTTC of Cornwall, Ontario. NetWinder WS starts at $800 for one with an 810Mb drive.
