Networking firm Cisco has upgraded its social media platform Quad with new enhancements and has re-branded it as WebEx Social.

The company has extended the capacity of the social platform beyond web conferencing by incorporating social and telepresence capabilities, allowing companies use social and video to Increase employee innovation and engagement.

The new enhanced platform now offers Microsoft Office integration, enabling workers to use Word, PowerPoint and Excel capabilities within WebEx Social.

It also includes e-mail integration so that customers in e-mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook while also creating and posting updates to WebEx Social.

The company is also introducing enhancements to WebEx Social iPhone and iPad client that will enable workers to transit from social networking to real-time IM, Web conferencing and voice calls directly from their mobile application.

The enhanced platform also adds new browser-based video calling that enables users to escalate high-definition (HD) video conferencing session, without going to a separate application.

WebEx Social is available as an on-premise (WebEx Social Server) application, partner-hosted (through Logicalis, ACS and Alphawest) and a Cisco-hosted cloud-based application.

The company has also upgraded its Callway, the hosted telepresence applications, and re-branded it as Cisco WebEx Telepresence.

The upgraded Callway platform has the ability to host a video call with up to nine users on the WebEx Telepresence network, support for up to 1080p HD video resolution and a new online customer portal that allows centralised management for company administrators.
