China has finally set up its long-awaited second telecommunications network, China United Telecommunications Corp, nicknamed Unicom in English and Liantong in Chinese, backed by the ministries of power industry, electronics industry and railways, the People’s Daily and other state media announced: the move is seen as the ambitious Ministry of Electronics Industry putting one over on a plodding Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications, Reuter reported from Peking; China has pledged to raise at least $7,000m in overseas investment this decade for telecommunications development.
