Map-D Technologies, an analytics startup, is looking to disrupt the database market with the "fastest" big data and visualisation platform after raising $1.5m in funding.

The one-year-old company, based in San Francisco, closed its first round of funding from chip maker NVIDIA, Google Ventures, and a number of angel investors.

The company uses graphic processors units (GPUs) found in everyday computers that claim to make data processing up to 70 times faster than traditional CPUs.

Map-D said it will use the money for product development, with plans to release its first commercial later this year.

"There aren’t really any other tools on the market that allow truly interactive visualisation and analytics on big data," said Todd Mostak, cofounder of Map-D, in a statement.

"Map-D can query data at a rate of terabytes per second per server, something only possible by building the fastest possible software on the fastest possible hardware, GPUs"

The funding comes after Map-D won $100,000 from Nvidia at the Emerging Technologies Summit in March.
