Austel, the Australian telecommunications authority, plans to establish a Personal Handyphone System network in the country by the end of the year according to officials at Japan’s Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications. Visitors with handsets registered in Japan will likely be able to use them in Australia, since the network will use the same bandwidth, it added. Networks have already been established in Singapore, Hong Kong and a number of South American countries.
