Bern, Switzerland-based service automation and telecommunications company Ascom AG has used Iona Technologies Ltd’s Orbix object request broker software in its latest range of ticket vending machines. Using Orbix enabled Ascom to implement internal subsystems for the vending machines, including those for payment, printing, alarm and display that can talk to each other. Ascom, which provides ticket vending machines to the New Jersey Transit, LTA Singapore and British Rail, says that typical TVMs are no longer standalone systems, and are integrated into complex networks, and that it wants to establish interoperability between the different components. It also needs to provide for integration with external customer management systems. Ascom has used Orbix to integrate C++ and Java components, with Windows NT as the default platform.
