West Germany’s DFN-Verein, set up to develop a German research network, has signed an agreement with Apple Computer GmbH that will eventually gain Apple Macintosh users access to the databases of DFN-Verein’s X25-based scientific research network WIN. Apple will also supply software to the research institutions linked up to WIN, so that Mac users can receive information on the network via electronic mail and Bildschirmtext, Btx, the Deutsche Bundespost’s equivalent of British Telecommunications Plc’s Prestel viewdata service; according to DFN-Verein, around 100,000 personal computers will be linked up to WIN by 1994.
