Apple has applied for the standardisation of new SIM cards which are smaller in size so that the company can innovate and break barriers that stop it from developing thinner devices.
The Reuters reported, citing an Orange executive, that Apple has submitted plans to the European telecoms standards body (ETSI) for the development of a smaller SIM cards.
The move is seen as Apple’s efforts to break new grounds in the both new designs and updates of its existing products. Apple, the company that is particular about design, started a new era and market with its iPad devices. The innovation helped the company to register quarterly profits that overtook rival Microsoft’s for the first time in 20 years.
An ETSI spokesman has confirmed that Apple had made the proposal for the new standard for SIM cards.
However the spokesman added that the standards body has not decided on the proposal and that it may take up to a year to do so.
"This process may take some time, up to a year or more, if there is strong disagreement between industry players. However, when there is broad consensus among the companies participating in the standards committee, the process can be accelerated to a number of months," he said.
Apple has not commented on the matter so far.
