One of the Advanced Computing Environment initiative’s claims is that members will be able to develop systems based on the same building blocks that are sufficiently differentiated to enable them to go after separate market niches, and at Comdex/Spring in Chicago last week Microsoft Corp gave a clean bill of health to the Hardware Abstraction Layer, which resides in the MIPS Computer Systems Inc Advanced RISC Computing specification, and is designed to facilitate this differentiation, saying that running NT on the R4000, HAL does indeed meet its claimed potential.
