Santa Clara, California-based Intel said Alcatel was among 10 key WiMax equipment vendors to choose Rosedale 2, which supports both 802.16-2004 and 802.16e-2005 standards.
But an Intel spokesperson declined to discuss when the chipmaker might actually launch the chip.
The broadband wireless business unit of France-based Alcatel said Rosedale 2-based devices would be interoperable with Alcatel’s Universal WiMax 802.16e-2005 system.
Other customers for Rosedale 2 include Airspan Networks, Alvarion, Aperto Networks, Axxcelera Broadband Wireless, Proxim Wireless, Redline Communications, Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices and SR Telecom, according to Intel.
Intel is one of the WiMax industry’s leading proponents. Earlier this year, the company announced a mobile WiMax PC card and a single-chip multi-band WiFi/WiMax radio, codenamed Ofer.
