Nvidia has unveiled the Nvidia Metropolis intelligent video analytics platform, a new tool to help with the creation of AI Cities.
Nvidia says that this new analytics platform will create more efficient cities by utilising Metropolis’ machine learning technology in tandem with data collected from video streams of public places.
As Metropolis views and analyses huge amounts of data from these video streams, It’s hoped that this technology will improve public safety, traffic management and resource optimisation among many other facets of city life.
Deepu Talla, vice president and general manager of the Tegra business at NVIDIA, said: “Deep learning is enabling powerful intelligent video analytics that turn anonymized video into real-time valuable insights, enhancing safety and improving lives.”
“The NVIDIA Metropolis platform enables customers to put AI behind every video stream to create smarter cities.”
Nvidia say that the majority of data currently generated comes from videos, particularly from cameras in public areas such as government property and public transit. By 2020 the number of cameras currently on city streets is expected to rise by 1 billion.
At present only a small fraction of this video data is analysed and then used in any meaningful way, even then most of this was record and reviewed by humans at a later date.
Using Nvidia Metropolis’ deep learning capabilities it is hoped that the machines will be able to much more accurately process the information provided, as attempts in the past have proven to be less reliable.
Dr. Mahesh Saptharishi, chief technology officer at Avigilon, said: “With the fast-paced environment of a city, there are a near infinite number of activities taking place.”
“We’re excited by the potential of NVIDIA’s Metropolis platform, as Avigilon continues to deliver AI-powered surveillance solutions and video analytics that focus users’ attention on what matters most, in order to take action.”
Currently there are more than 50 Nvidia AI city partners producing applications and products that utilise GPU deep learning.
