Bosch and NVIDIA have announced that they are developing an autonomous car artificial intelligence driving system.
The system was announced at the keynote address of Bosch Connected World, in Berlin, at the company’s annual Internet of Things conference. Bosch is the largest automotive supplier in the world, whilst NVIDIA develops artificial intelligence systems, among other things.
Bosch said that the deep learning software and hardware provided by NVIDIA will allow cars to be ‘trained on the complexities of driving, operated autonomously and updated over the air with new features and capabilities.’
Jen-Hsun Huang, founder and CEO, NVIDIA, said: “Self-driving cars is a challenge that can finally be solved with recent breakthroughs in deep learning and artificial intelligence.”
“Using DRIVE PX AI car computer, Bosch will build automotive-grade systems for the mass production of autonomous cars. Together we will realise a future where autonomous vehicles make mobility safe and accessible to all.”
The Bosch AI will utilise NVIDIA Drive PX technology alongside the company’s upcoming super-chip, Xavier. Xavier has been designed from the ground up to be the world’s first chip capable of level 4 autonomous driving, which means the vehicle will be able to drive completely unassisted except from in severe weather conditions.
Self driving cars will require the power of Xavier due to properly handle the vast number of tasks that self-driving cars have to manage simultaneously. In order to operate safely, and securely self-driving cars have to have a full understanding of the 3D environment, localise themselves on a map, and predict the actions of other cars.
Dr. Volkmar Denner, Bosch CEO, said: “Automated driving makes roads safer, and artificial intelligence is the key to making that happen.
“We are making the car smart.”
The two companies aim to bring the intelligent autonomous computer to mass market in the near future.
