Apple has acquired the start-up behind Workflow, the renowned automation app on iOS.
San Francisco-based DeskConnect, the developer of the Workflow app, was founded in 2012. Investors include Rough Draft Ventures.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Workflow allows users to drag and drop any combination of actions to create powerful workflows for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
It enables users to create their own shortcuts for several functions associated to iOS and third-party apps for iPads and iPhones.
As part of the deal, the Workflow team including Ari Weinstein, Conrad Kramer, and Nick Frey, will be joining Apple.
Weinstein told TechCrunch, “We’ve worked closely with Apple from the very beginning, from kickstarting our company as students attending WWDC to developing and launching Workflow and seeing its amazing success on the App Store.
“We can’t wait to take our work to the next level at Apple and contribute to products that touch people across the world.”
In 2015, the Workflow app won an Apple Design Award for its accessibility features. Apple is now offering the app for free on its App Store which used to cost $2.99.
There is no clarity on how the Workflow app will be integrated with Apple’s offerings.
In addition to offering a standalone Workflow app, Apple could potentially seek to integrate the technology into iOS. It may be used alongside Siri in the future.
Apple has recently introduced Clips, a new app which allows users to create expressive videos on iPhone and iPad.

The app features a design for combining video clips, photos and music into great-looking videos. They can share those videos with friends via the Messages app, or on Instagram, Facebook and other popular social networks.
It also includes Live Titles, a feature that allows users create animated captions and titles using just their voice.
