ICL Inc, the US software marketing arm of Fujitsu Ltd’s ICL Plc, is set to introduce its server implementation of the LDAP Lightweight Directory Access Protocol Version 3 at the Electronic Messaging Association conference in Anaheim, California next week. It will be available with the new version of ICL’s i500 Enterprise Directory, which is being introduced at the same time, and will support LDAP version 2 or version 3 clients from Netscape Communications Corp, Microsoft Corp and others. ICL says the software is an attempt to combine the easier to use lightweight LDAP protocol with the enterprise capabilities of a full heavyweight X.500-compliant directory. LDAP version 3 includes better security through support for Transport Layer Security, the newly standardized Secure Sockets Layer. It also supports international character sets through Unicode. The i500 LDAP server source code will be available to OEMs and resellers with the i500 Enterprise Directory Version 8 in late May.
