Microsoft Corp says it is dropping support for Java in IE for Mac and Unix. It claims it simply does not have enough time or resources to re-engineer all of the flavors of Internet Explorer to comply with a court order requiring it to conform to Sun Microsystems Inc’s Java within 90 days. Instead it says it will point these users to other JVM makers, including Sun, Apple and Symantec. Judge Whyte has asked Microsoft to update him early next month on its progress. Microsoft says it will probably wait until then before saying exactly how it will make its Windows products comply with the preliminary injunction order.
