Another day, another internet survey, International Data Group (IDG) at its Internet Executive Forum in San Jose, California has claimed that the internet economy will be worth $950bn in 2002, from the $200bn they put its value at today. More controversially, the vice president of IDG, Dr Robert M. Metcalfe, suggested that the increased bandwidth required to facilitate more e commerce on the net should be financed for by a ‘pay as you go’ model. Speaking at the Forum, he said, If food, transportation and electricity, why not the internet? However, he suggested that the cost of the bandwidth burden should be taken up by net advertisers, not the end users.
