Green on Facebook

In an effort to "promote the power of openness," Facebook revealed that its use in 2011 was from office space, data centres and other facilities was 532Kwh.

Facebook’s data also revealed that the average active Facebook member uses 269 grams per month; the equivalent of a medium sized latte or three large bananas.

The social network’s greenhouse gas emissions from its data centres, office space, employee commuting and travel and server transportation totalled 285,000 metric tonnes of CO2e.

The company reported that from its energy mix 23% was clean and renewable, 17% natural gas, 13% nuclear, 20% uncategorised and 27% of the mix was coal.

"When we bring our Lulea, Sweden, data centre online in 2014, we expect to see a steady increase in the clean and renewable sources powering our data centre operations," said Facebook. "We’ve set a company goal to derive at least 25% of our energy mix from clean and renewable sources by 2015."

Facebook plans to introduce more clean and renewable energy that powers their data centres by engaging with environmental organisations and utility providers to promote clean and renewable energy sources. The company also plans to include a renewable energy component to each new data centre it builds.

We know that there is great opportunity in the power of our platform and the more than 950 million people who use Facebook," said the company. "Through our facebook.com/green page and investment in partnerships, we are aiming to drive environmental awareness, education and action."
