BMG and Universal, two of the five largest record labels in the world, are set to participate in what sources call a major announcement in the internet media business. The event will take place in New York City today, Wednesday April 6. There are few hints as to what the announcement is about, but it’s worth noting that BMG and Universal are both members of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In February, both companies pledged their support to RIAA’s Secure Digital Music Initiative (CI No 3,594), an effort to develop technologies to prevent music copyright theft on the net.
