Amdahl Corp says it will resell Network Appliance Inc’s NetApp file servers and software. They’ll fit into the mainframer’s storage area network strategy. The deal could be extended to other Network Appliance products over time and is another string in the company’s bow. Amdahl owner Fujitsu Ltd already resells Network Appliance kit. Meantime Amdahl’s also reselling Sterling Software’s storage management software as part of its SAN strategy.

Network Appliance says the additional resources it has poured into its NetCache network caching product line is paying dividends this quarter. The market for caching appliances and software is said to be growing at a 65% a year clip, faster than storage, which is why Network Appliance is giving it so much attention. It is touting a new report from Internet Research Group which says that Network Appliance is now neck and neck in the market at 28% with brand leader Inktomi. The total size of the caching market for 1999 is projected to be $287m, rising to nearly $2.2bn in 2003.
