Apple told a US court that it is seeking more than $2.5bn in damages from Samsung Electronics for alleged patent infringement.

The dispute centers on patents related to technology involving smartphones and tablets, such as the iPhone and iPad, according to Reuters.

Apple outlined the estimates ahead of a scheduled jury trial before US District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California on July 30.

In a redacted court filing, Apple said Samsung in the smartphone and tablet markets, "chose to compete by copying Apple."

The iPhone maker has alleged that Samsung has reaped billions of dollars in profits and caused Apple to lose hundreds of millions of dollars through its violation of Apple’s intellectual property.

Apple also said that it is entitled to over $25m in reasonable royalty damages on the small set of remaining sales for which it cannot obtain an award of Samsung’s profits or Apple’s own lost profits, giving a combined total of $2.525bn.

The document reveals the figures could be ramped up if Samsung is found to have willfully infringed the patents and it is only conservative estimate.

According to the report, immediately after Apple’s filing, Samsung counterfiled and said Apple is trying "to stifle legitimate competition and limit consumer choice to maintain its historically exorbitant profits."
