More than 80% of people in the UK access the internet at least once a week, according to the findings by European Commission’s Digital Agenda.

Though the majority of Britons are using the Internet on regular basis, companies are not taking advantage of the digital revolution, the report revealed. Just 14% of UK-based small businesses sold their products online over the last year, a long way off the European Commission’s target of 33% by the year 2015.

Companies are yet to take advantage of the increase in web use despite 71% of British people are currently shopping online.

European Commission vice president Neelie Kroes said: "Government and industries are not keeping up with Europeans’ hunger for digital choices and by doing so we are shooting ourselves in the foot by under-investing."

The total number of people with access to high-speed internet grew by 0.1% between January 2011 and January 2012.
