Hitachi Data Systems Inc says it’s now doubled the data access speed and capacity of its Freedom Storage 5800 storage subsystem. HDS, now the OEM supplier of storage systems to Hewlett-Packard Co, says its new TurboLUN feature boosts transaction processing capabilities. TurboLUN uses a high speed cache to store critical data, reducing retrieval times for frequently requested information. It’s most suitable for use with database log files, which are highly active and typically have relatively small block sizes. HDS has has introduced new 18Gb drives that spin at 10,000 revolutions per minute, for 40% faster reading and writing, and new 36Gb drives which provide over 2Tb of usable storage in a single rack, double the current capacity.
