IBM Global Services, the IT services unit of IBM Corp, continues to swell its enormous contract backlog with the announcement of two outsourcing deals worth a total of $1.5bn. The larger, a nine-and-a-half year, $1bn contract with Nissan, will see IBM GS manage the computer and network operations of the Japanese automotive giant’s North American arm. IBM GS will also help Nissan develop and implement a new worldwide IT management system. IBM GS has also secured a seven-year, $550m deal to deliver end-to-end solutions across the mainframe, midrange and helpdesk operations of US-based technology and manufacturing group AlliedSignal. The two wins add to IBM GS’s stated total contract backlog of around $58bn. IBM GS looks set to exceed $30bn revenue for fiscal 99.
