In its bid to offer all things to all customers, Apple Computers Inc said yesterday it was extending its build-to-order (BTO) capabilities to regional resellers so that users can order customized versions of Power Macintosh G3 computers and servers. Last year, the Cupertino, California-based company introduced The Apple Store on its web site (CI No 3,287), giving customers the opportunity to buy BTO Macintosh computers over the internet. But this latest step is designed for customers who want a more personalized service, Apple said in an official statement. Now residential customers and businesses can custom order Apple systems from their local retailer or reseller. Apple said resellers who participate in its new Reseller BTO store program will have access to a variety of options to order customized systems configured to specifically meet their customers’ needs. The company said it expects to add additional products, alongside its Power Macintosh G3 computers, to the program in the future. Meantime the macosrumors web site reported that Kinko’s, the copy shop, is going to rid its 950 stores of Macs.
