France Telecom’s Wanadoo dial-up internet service now has over 200,000 subscribers, two years after its launch on 2 May 1996. With 1,000 new subscribers signing up per day, the service has doubled its subscriber base in the last four months, suggesting that the internet is finally taking off in France. Wanadoo subscribers consult around 20 million web pages a month, France Telecom says. Home users account for 63% of subscribers, with the remainder using the service at work. The company reports a strong male bias among its users, with women representing just 11% of subscribers. France Telecom is currently running a trial of ADSL access to Wanadoo involving 500 users in the Paris suburb of Seine Saint Denis. It is also testing cable modem access in six cities.
