According to research by Robert Half technology, small companies were found least likely to migrate to the cloud with 38% saying they do not plan to use cloud technology. 8% of medium-sized companies said they do not plan to use the technology as well as 12% of large companies.
46% of businesses said security was the main reason they would not adopt cloud technology.
Companies that did plan to move to cloud reported that the top reasons were for storage (37%), data centres (28%), servers (27%), applications like CRM (26%) and software developments (18%).
"The benefits of cloud computing are now well-understood, with the majority of businesses currently using cloud-based services for applications such as storage and data centres – and achieving cost and efficiency benefits as a result," said Neil Hedges senior manager at Robert Half technology. "However, a smaller proportion of companies are missing out on these benefits because of their concerns about security and continuity of service."
24% of companies also reported they had concerns about moving to cloud because of their lack of in-house knowledge.
"It’s surprising that so many heads of IT appear to have not embraced the value of cloud technology, although this may be partly due to a lack of understanding of the benefits and how it can be applied to their organisation," said Hedges. "Many companies without the requisite talent in-house are turning to IT contractors and project professionals to help educate their teams on how to adopt the cloud, mitigate against security risks and improve service delivery."
