Iona Technologies Inc says it is now shipping OrbixCOMet, its link between software written to Microsoft Corp’s COM Component Object Model and the Object Management Group’s CORBA Common Object Request Broker API specification (CI No 3,334). Iona licensed Microsoft’s COM technology back in January this year, declaring that the CORBA-COM war is over (CI No 3,422). OrbixCOMet should enable developers to create applications in development environments such as Visual Basic, PowerBuilder and Delphi and map them to CORBA applications. It ships after a beta program that included some 500 sites. OrbixCOMet Desktop, which runs on Pentium or higher PCs with at least 16Mb memory, is the first product in the family, and costs $495 per developer.
