NEC Corp’s US Computer Systems Division has sold retail electronics chain Circuit City Stores Inc over 500 of its NEC Express5800 ES1200 servers for use in its 514 US stores. Deployed in August throughout the chain, the machines are running Circuit City’s new built-to-order kiosks, for customers to specify their own computers, conduct side-by-side comparisons and place orders and choose delivery options. The servers run Windows NT Terminal Server. The kiosks are Circuit City’s attempt to compete with computer dealers and hardware manufacturers who specialize in direct sales. NEC says the installation is one of the earliest to use Windows Terminal Server, the multi-user NT option, introduced back in June (CI No 3,434). They are monitored by NEC’s ESMPRO management suite. Circuit City says it has seen significant increases in desktop sales since the first kiosks were deployed in June.
