NCR Corp, Dayton, Ohio, has reported second-quarter net income of $48m on revenue down 4.3% at $1.57bn, compared to a net loss of $4.0m a year ago. The company said revenue was flat on a constant currency basis. Six-month net income also stood at $48m on revenue that fell 5.0% to $2.88bn, compared to a loss of $20m last year. Earnings per share for the quarter and six-month periods was $0.46. Results include a pre-tax gain of $55m stemming from the sale of the company’s Top End enterprise middleware technology to BEA Systems Inc. Gross margins for the quarter rose to 30%, up 2.2 points from the year-ago quarter, while total orders were down year-over-year by a mid-single-digit percentage. Single-digit gains in financial products and scaleable data warehouse products and double-digit gains in professional service orders were offset by double-digit declines in retail and other computer products. Geographically, revenues saw moderate gains in all markets except in Asia/Pacific and Japan, which saw declines. Total expenses in the second quarter were $449m, down 6% from the year-ago quarter’s $477m.
