Sun also announced a new streamlined series of servers aimed at telecoms companies, who require machines that run in DC power rather than the standard AC, among other things. The Netra t1400 and t1405 servers, says Sun, are designed to be adjunct processors in a telecom network, location registers in a wireless phone network or as a proxy cache server at an internet service provider. The new Netra ts are only 20 inches deep, yet another requirement of telecom firms. Both models support up to four 440MHz UltraSparc-II processors each with 4Gb of L2 cache memory and up to 4Gb of main memory. They have four PCI slots and include AC and DC power options.

Sun also announced a DC-enabled version of the Netra t1 Flapjack server for ISPs called the t1 model 100, a 1RU height unit that allows up to 40 servers to be stacked in a single rack. By the end of the year, Sun will be adding the Apache Web server and an evaluation copy of the iPlanet Enterprise Edition Web server to the Netra t1’s CD. Pricing for the Netra T1 model 100 with a 360MHz processor, 64Mb of main memory, 9Gb of disk and a Solaris license starts at $5,000. Sun also announced the Netra st D130 server, a 1RU disk array that complements the t1 servers that costs $4,800 with two 18Gb disks in the box. The D130 array uses 10K RPM disks and can have up to 54Gb of total capacity. All of the above machines are set to ship during Sun’s fourth calendar quarter, which means any day now we presume.
